Tradition, hope and colorful palette in the opening concert of Varna Summer IMF 2024
Two years before its 100th anniversary, “Varna Summer”International Music Festival presents an opening concert that combines tradition and future. There is a tradition as again, the first piece to be performed is Pancho Vladigerov’s Vardar Rhapsody (in the year that celebrates 125 years since the composer’s birth); there is a premiere of a new piece especially composed for the festival by the Belgian composer Patrick Dheur – Ouverture en forme d'Espérance. It will continue the newly set tradition to musically pass the baton of the actual Presidency of the Council of Europe. The program continues with a concerto that the audience loves and anticipates – brave and innovative for the time it was created, Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F that combines in a unique way jazz and classical form. Magnificent guest soloist – the USA based pianist Sarkis Baltayan – has performed this concerto many times across America’s concert halls, including Carnegie hall.
The finale of the opening evening is bright and colorful with the suite “El Amor Brujo” – the first work of Manuel de Falla after he came back from Paris to Spain. Konstantin Ilievsky takes the important role of putting together all the musical elements – he is the chief conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Bulgarian National Radio. Another moment to highlight – this is his debut with the Orchestra of the Varna State Opera. This is how the magical musical tour named “Varna Summer” begins.
